Rules of the Floor

Do you have rules for your critical raised floor? Implementation of this easy project can save time and money by avoiding problems that can occur in your data center.

I found that floor rules are easily communicated by posting large signs on all the entrance doors to your critical raised floor, as well as providing small duplicate copies for everyone entering the area to carry with them. This is especially helpful if vendors are left unattended at times. I also recommend that you keep a log book, for all who receive the cards, to sign. This will ensure that they are aware and understand all fo the rules set forth.

Below is an example of some of the rules that I recommend for your critical raised floor environment. Customize and add rules which are applicable to your individual site.

RAISED FLOOR RULES

    1. Authorized personnel only.
    2. Food and drinks are prohibited in raised floor areas.
    3. EPO switches are located at principal exits - Only. Those trained and authorized should use the EPO switch-and only in the event of a life-threatening emergency or fire situation.
    4. All employees, contractors, and vendors with authorized access are required to scan in/out at each card reader. Access badges are not to be shared.
    5. Confirm that the fire alarm system is disabled before working below the raised floor and re-enabled upon completion of work.
    6. Use only electrical outlets marked "Maintenance" for power tools, task lighting, test equipment, laptops, etc. Extension cords are only to be used in these maintenance outlets.
    7. Circuits must remain in their designated server cabinets. Do not feed other critical loads from one cabinet to another.
    8. Only authorized individuals may plug in or disconnect IT equipment.
    9. Raised floor tiles may only be opened by authorized personnel; no more than 6 tiles at one time. Additional open tiles may cause overheating in other areas of the raised floor.
    10. Propping doors open is prohibited. This can overheat critical equipment.
    11. Packing material should be removed prior to enter the raised floor area.
    12. Return all tile pullers to their designated locations.
